I kept moving to be sure there was no confusion about my still being alive.  I did not want to be mistaken for road kill.  At first I saw them off in the distance sitting on the newly mown field next to me as I walked the path at Cedarcrest.  I thought they were regular wild turkeys.  Then I saw them take off.  They were Turkey Vultures.

On the wing, Turkey Vultures are elegant birds.  Their wingspan is almost that of an American Bald Eagle.  When the sun hits them a certain way, the feathers on their wings seem translucent.  They float effortlessly, wings in a V shape, circling and soaring. Once a couple of years ago, one came over me so closely that I could hear the swish of its wings.  As long as a person is far enough away that he/she cannot see the ugly heads, they appear beautiful.

It was very impressive to see so many in the air at the same time.  Later in the walk, a Green Heron landed on a nearly pier as I passed one of the large ponds there.  The morning walk continues to be helpful.  At the moment, I think I actually need it to help keep my healing on course.

Wednesday morning (today is Friday) had been a good one since the Spiritual Formation group continues to provide a rich environment for processing what has gone on or is now going on in our lives in a way that reveals God’s hand, loving and supporting us.   There was a lunch with a good friend including some great conversation, very refreshing.

The afternoon included the second day of exercising.  The muscles that were getting sore, were worked enough to help relieve the discomfort for the moment. Then I headed to the mall to try to get a gift for Granddaughter Ashlyn’s upcoming birthday. I ended up walking the circumference of the mall on both levels, probably adding up to almost as much distance as I do in the morning.  I decided to try to add a mall walk on the hot afternoons.

I ended up at a couple of other places to get the gift.  Even with all that activity, the pain of Mary Ann’s death emerged, staying with me the rest of the day.  Oddly, yesterday a neighbor who lost her husband a couple of years ago, called to see how I was doing and revealed that she had had a bad day on Wednesday also.  Must be something in the air.

Yesterday was some better.  The walk in the morning was followed by a visit from a member and his daughter.  Ed is helping with a bit a caulk repair in the bathroom. They were both fun to talk with.  Later in the day a former member had asked me to to help her process something, a role that feels comfortable for me after so many years in the ministry.  That also was an enjoyable time.

I went directly to the third different support group meeting this week.  While there is a little overlap, they are all different groups.  It is remarkable just how helpful it is to be in a setting in which there is complete understanding and the freedom to laugh or cry without hesitance.  Talking so freely there makes it easier not to talk about the loss with others who will soon tire of hearing about how much it hurts.

The groups also help temper the fears that the pain is still so strong and hasn’t let go yet. It is apparent that those who have experienced a death as recently as have I are struggling at least as much as am I.  Those for whom the death was a couple of years ago, still have access to the pain, but they are not disabled by it.  They are able to enjoy life again.  The groups provide a helpful perspective.

After spending some time with vultures this morning, I got some more organizing done at the house.  I decided to buy flowers in memory of Mary Ann and for myself. I did as I had done before when getting them for her.  I asked the folks at Flowers by Bill for ten dollars worth of colorful flowers.  I was given a large bouquet with varied colors, from pastels to deep, dark colors to bright and cheery colors.  That bouquet now adorns the dining room table.

There was another walk at the mall.  After that I went home and read a very small book called Good Grief by Granger Westberg.  Daughter Lisa had asked about it in a phone call.  She saw it on a Hospice list of recommended books.  That little book was very helpful since it nailed very many of the struggles I have been having and named them as stages in the process.  They are different from the stages of grief traditionally listed.  The book confirmed that feeling each stage fully is a way to get through the grief, incorporating it into the new person who is emerging.  Not everyone will, of course, grieve in exactly the same way, but what he described seems to be the most common experience.

The evening ended with a very enjoyable dinner out with former parishioners.  We came back to the house and talked for a while about a variety of things.  I felt almost healthy again.

A couple of days ago, as I was making one of the rounds in the mall, something very obvious found its way into my awareness.  While Mary Ann has died, I have not.  It doesn’t seem fair that I should be alive and she is not.  Fair or not, it is so.  I am actually alive.  I do not need to feel guilty about that or apologize for it.  I am free to go on with life.  Recognizing that does not make it easy, just possible.

This is way harder than I ever imagined it could be.  I have counseled people, comforted people, ministered to people who have been in this kind of pain.  I thought I understood, felt their pain.  I had no idea just how much it hurt.  I saw it in their eyes, felt it in their tears, heard it in their voices.  I had no idea the intensity of the pain I was seeing.

Friend John from KC called to check on me.  I told him that I was grieving appropriately, keeping my reactions in check, only having allowed one evening of tears.  Daughter Lisa called to check on me.  I was writing thank you notes at the time she called, listening to a CD of Mozart (a gift to Mary Ann from Young).  Just as Lisa phoned, the piece of music that had started playing was a vocal solo with a voice much like Kristen’s (who sang at the funeral), singing Laudate Dominum, the very piece Kristen sang.  I did not react other than in my gut, but that reaction was painful.

If I were counseling myself, I would tell me that it is way too soon to expect any diminishing of the pain.  In fact as everyone, including me has said, it gets harder after the initial flurry of activity comes to an end.  I would tell me that.  I would be right.  So, what difference does it make to tell me that.  It still hurts like hell.

I now appreciate just how courageous all those people are who have gone through this and survived to live again.  Now I understand.  I can only hope that I will find similar courage.  I am confident that I will be fine, come to life again.  I just don’t have that time in sight yet.

I am currently planning on writing two posts tonight.  This one is about my struggle.  I just could not sit down and start writing about Mary Ann’s and my history together (the second post I plan to write tonight).  I needed to release some pain in words.  I can assure you, if you have not yet tired of it, you will soon tire of me whining about how much this hurts.  Almost everyone I have counseled during times like this has commented on how hard it is to find people willing to listen after a while.  People just tire of hearing the same sad story of how much it hurts.  If they don’t actually say it (sometimes they do), they are thinking, “when is he/she going to get over this, they have been whining too long.”  The problem is, it still does hurt, long after everyone else thinks it shouldn’t any more, that he/she should be getting on with life.

The harsh reality is, no amount of talking, thinking, praying, meditating, writing, crying, walking or eating ice cream is going to take the pain away.  It will have to run its course and find a tolerable spot to live in me as life goes on.

At this point, too much quiet, alone time, as much as I have relished it in the past does not seem to be a good idea.  I suspect I am more in need of social interaction than solitude.  In social settings a holy hypocrisy takes over.  It calls me to be better than I feel, to be okay even if I am not.  I don’t feel okay, but if I wait until I feel okay to re-enter life and function normally, it will be a long time in coming.

I got up early this morning and went to Cedar Crest again to walk a couple of miles.  It was a cool morning, blue sky with whispy white clouds, some with little puffs in rows.  The birds were singing again, Meadow Larks, Robins, Blue Jays, Red Winged Blackbirds, a Great Blue Heron and more that I didn’t recognize.  What appeared to be a Green Heron flew over at one point.  They are far less  common than the others.

I did some chores, changed the linens on my bed, washed them along with the few things I had in the hamper.  I am going to have trouble getting enough for a load of wash and filling the dishwasher full enough to justify running it.  I fed watered plants and fed the birds.  The routine tasks help give me a sense of accomplishment, however insignificant tasks are.

I made a necessary trip to the grocery store.  It felt strange to be pushing only the grocery cart instead of pushing the wheel chair with one hand and pulling the cart with the other.  I bought nothing frivolous, but it came to $75.  What does one person need with $75 worth of groceries.

Even though I have only done a small percentage of the thank you notes, I am glad to have gotten started.  As I suspected, that is a therapeutic activity, if sometimes a little sad as memories are triggered.

Writing about the intensity of the pain has helped take the edge off.  Now I am ready to write some more about Mary Ann’s and my life together.

Someone recently wrote a vivid description of how she anticipated a social gathering going.  She lost her husband about a year and a half ago.  The pain is still almost overwhelming.  She is anticipating going to the social gathering and pretending to be fine.  She would act the part, bantering with the others there, appreciating what each other is wearing.  All the while she would be feeling the pain of that loss, trying not to reveal it. 

Why pretend?  Well, who would be interested in hearing her whine about it?  She should be over it, right?  It has been long enough to stop grieving, let go of the pain and enjoy life again?  If she didn’t pretend, if she let it all come out in that public setting, she would soon become a social pariah.

First of all, there is an absolute lie out there that anyone who has lost a spouse or a child knows is a lie.  The lie is that after a year, a person ought to be over the loss, be done grieving and be able to get on with life no longer disabled by the pain of that loss.  Sometimes acquaintances begin to get impatient with a person’s grieving just months after the loss. 

It just doesn’t work that way!  Grieving is so complex as not to allow any template defining its time frame and boundaries.  No one can decide for someone else how to grieve or how long to grieve.  Yes, grieving can turn into a pathology.  But sometimes one person’s pathology is another’s path to acceptance and good health.  Most of those who allowed me into their lives at a time of deep pain over a loss have needed reassurance more than diagnosis.  They needed to be reassured that it is all right for them to feel the pain, to be okay and then relapse, to cry too much or too little in the judgment of friends and acquaintances.  They needed to be allowed to keep their defensive denial in place as long as they needed it until they were ready to let the full force of the loss finally hit them. 

Those who had gone through a painful loss, needed a place to talk it through, a place where they had permission to go over the same territory over and over again until the intensity began to diminish.   They needed a place where there was no need to pretend. 

What became clear to me in four decades of ministry to people in pain is that while each is convinced that he/she is surrounded with people who are doing fine, while he/she is not, he/she is surrounded with others who are doing the very same thing.  When we are in pain, we look at others who appear to be normal, happy, well-adjusted, but are pretending just as we are. 

Those of us who are doing full time caregiving, whose world is filled with never ending responsibility for someone else’s well-being can decide that no one out there understands.  We can begin to isolate ourselves and then conclude that no one cares about us.  If they cared they would pay more attention to us.  The truth is, we are surrounded by others who are looking at us longing for a bit of our attention, a word of interest in their situation, maybe thinking we would not understand since we are normal, happy and well-adjusted.

When I looked out over the congregation in a worship service, it often struck me that people with similar problems might be sitting near one another with absolutely no clue that they were both in almost the same situation. 

The way to find the strength to deal with our own pain, is to turn away from it long enough to see someone else’s struggle and try to make a difference.  Allowing others to shed their pretenses with us, not only helps them find the strength to deal with their pain but puts our pain in perspective and allows the possibility of our pain becoming more bearable.  

When we open ourselves to see and hear the stories of other people’s struggles, we find that we are not alone, there are others who understand.  Not only that, we are challenged to live meaningfully with our problems.  Seeing and hearing other people tell us their stories takes from us our excuses for allowing the problem to rule our lives and interfere with finding joy and meaning in life. 

No we are not okay.  We are in pain.  We have suffered a loss.  We are just putting on a front.  No one else understands or cares.  They are all okay.  Sorry — not true!  Most of us have a load of pain to carry.  Most of us are not at all okay.  Maybe it is time to stop pretending we are the only ones hurting. Maybe it is time to actually pay attention to someone else, listen to them without explaining why our suffering is greater than theirs.  Maybe by removing the pretense we can support one another, draw strength from one another and steal from our pain the power to separate and isolate and rule our lives.
